Great day today at the AJ Bell Stadium for the Salford CVS awards celebrating volunteering in Salford. We had nominated 1 young carer & one of our small project groups but had little idea what was about to happen as we sat and chatted over Soup & Sandwiches.
When the awards started we found that everyone in the room had a vote in every category via an electronic voting system, great idea and by the time we got to our first category we all had the hang of it just!!
The first young person we had up was Ciaron, nominated for his work on the Board and in school raising awareness of young carers and making it easier for people to access support. He had also been a driving force behind the "Who Cares" Project with the Lowry. All got a buzz when he was in the short list of three for the prestigious JOSIE BROWNE PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD great achievement in itself but wow he won it......so pleased his dad, & mum who he cares for, could be there to see it.
When the excitement died down we found that the group who had put together the 2017 YCs calendar had been short listed for the VOLUNTERING TEAM OF THE YEAR AWARD and then could not believe our ears when we realised they had won as well!!! Stevie from the group collected the trophy and was near to tears with the excitement!! She represented the group well and we have to say the calendar is the best for years!!
Well that was that we thought and group photos taken before the biggest shock of the night......by winning an individual award Ciaron was shortlisted for Overall Volunteer of the Year Award and on the voting of all present he won....aged 15, a young carer, & his response.....why me? some of these other people have been volunteering for over 30 years- they all deserve it not me......special award for a special young man.
So 2 nominations but 3 awards sounds good to us!!
